Almost anyone who grew up in a place with four seasons can remember their family’s favorite winter activities. Some might have learned how to ski in a faraway place. Others might recall the exact location of the biggest hill in their neighborhood, where all the kids brought their sleds on snow days. And then there’s the snowball fights—a staple of childhood winters. The winter months are notoriously dreary, but there’s an easy fix: getting outdoors.

Photographs of winter sports and activities are hard won. Your batteries die quickly, your fingers go numb, and your lens gets foggy fast. But the uphill climb is part of what makes these images so special.

Several iconic photos have documented winter activities, like Chris Smith’s 1988 shot of Finnish ski jumper Matti Nykänen flying over Calgary, or Adam Scher’s photograph of New Yorkers skiing in Times Square in the middle of the 1996 blizzard.
